Volkswagen hits the US with 16 fuel cell-equipped Passat Lingyus

German automaker Volkswagen has just announced that they'll be participating in a project featuring fuel cell vehicles started in Sacramento, California. Volkswagen will be hitting American shores with 16 Passat Lingyu prototypes, designed in China and seen for the first time at the Beijing Summer Olympics.

The 16 prototypes will be swelling the ranks of the German manufacturer's fuel cell models, already eight strong. Volkswagen will present a total of 24 vehicles equipped with fuel cells, the largest fleet of its kind ever put forward by a single manufacturer in one spot.
The Passat Lingyu can reach top speeds of 145 km/h and travel 235 kilometres on a single tank of hydrogen. Only water and oxygen escape from the exhaust tips, as the Passat Lingyu produces no emissions.
The vehicle is part of Volkswagen's strategy to explore new solutions that will enable the manufacturer to produce much greener and more fuel efficient cars, from the moment they're produced until they're recycled.
